Summer in Southwest Florida usually means unexpected rain showers and this year has been no exception. Whether you are enjoying a day at the beach, having fun at the water park or having lunch al fresco, the rain sticks around long enough to put a damper on your outdoor plans. Even worse, it can ruin your outdoor furnishings if you aren’t prepared and leave a soggy mess in its wake.

Most people have electric roll-down storm shutters for protection from tropical storms or hurricanes. These shutters also provide privacy, security and convenience. However, usually the shutters are left up when you’re home so that you can enjoy the sunlight, fresh air and view that your outdoor living space provides. Forgetting to put them down when you go out to dinner, shopping, away for the weekend, or even sleeping can spell disaster for anything left on the lanai.

The solution to this problem is actually quite simple: invest in DryLanai, the wireless system that detects rain and automatically closes your electric roll-down storm shutters before any damage is done. No more waking up to find your favorite furnishings ruined. No more damp cushions. No more downpour messes to clean up. No more worries. It’s automatic rain protection for outdoor rooms.

Fashion trends are easy to spot and relay all over the world. But when it comes to our homes, the trends are a little harder to decipher. The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) sheds light on this year’s outdoor living trends with a survey of homeowners’ wishes.

The number one item on the list is adding a firepit or outdoor fireplace. The addition of a fire feature extends the amount of time people can enjoy their outdoor space. It’s evident that more people are retreating to their backyards for a stress-free environment, as another leading trend is outdoor rooms-complete with kitchen, dining and living areas ideal for entertaining.

Another noted trend is the use of environmentally friendly options, such as adding native plants and managing stormwater more effectively. Find out which plants are native to your specific geographical location, then plant them where they will thrive best on their own.

Water features are always a popular item and this year is no exception. From small to large scale, a charming water feature can add luxury to any backyard setting. The environmentally friendly trend also carries over to water features, as the reuse of stormwater in water features grows in popularity.

As more homeowners continue to create their own backyard paradise, new and exciting trends in outdoor landscaping will keep popping up. Having your own retreat that reflects your personal style is the best way to escape from the stresses of daily life.

We all want to protect our investments and our home is no exception. The drop is the economy has changed the way some people live – choosing to stay in a smaller home rather than go bigger, or even remodeling.

Whether you want to spruce up your kitchen, change the light fixtures, paint the front door or rejuvenate your outdoor space, making marketable improvements not only increases the value of your home, but makes your living space much more desirable and comfortable for you.

Of course, I can sit here and tell you how important it is to utilize the DryLanai system at your home because protects your outdoor living space from unexpected rain showers and provides peace of mind. But, I won’t do that. Instead, a few tips to add instant appeal to your home.

Curb appeal is the look and feel you get from the outward appearance of your home. The exterior of your house is just as important as the interior and is a first impression to what’s to come. When you or someone you know pulls up to your home, you want it to be inviting. Freshly mowed grass, fresh paint, landscaping with splashes of color and an inviting entry are just a few things you can do to increase your home’s appeal.
Renovate an old kitchen. This doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Just do the basics. Repaint cabinets if you can’t afford new ones. Replace knobs, install new flooring or updated appliances. New countertops are another option. The most important part is keeping the space functional.
Update a bathroom. Again, this can be done on a budget. Add artwork or new fixtures. Even adding new paint can make a big difference. If you’re budget isn’t so tight, put in new flooring, add a marble vanity top, molded sink or bathtub with shower and ceramic tile.
Improving the look of your home, both inside and out, is a great way to revitalize you, and your neighborhood. Most importantly, it helps protect your home’s value for years to come.

My friend Bob likes the latest and greatest in home automation — from simple things like remote control lighting, security and automatic sprinklers to more advanced concepts like sensing the presence of the person in a room and adjusting light ambiance, the temperature in the room and the volume of the music, according to different factors like the day of the week and the time.

On a recent golf outing, Bob’s golf game was cut short by an unexpected rain shower. Unfortunately, his golf game wasn’t the only thing ruined that day. When Bob returned to his home, he discovered the demise of the furniture on his screened in patio. He hadn’t lowered his storm shutters before leaving the house, and now his furniture was soaked, and he had a mess to clean up.

I felt bad for Bob, I really did, but for a man obsessed with home automation, he had missed the one thing that would have protected his furniture and prevented the hassle of cleaning up.

Bob mopped up the mess on his patio floor, fixed up his furniture and had his cushions dry cleaned. Now his patio is protected. He installed DryLanai, the wireless system that detects rain and automatically closes his electric roll-down storm shutters whether he is home or on the golf course.

Hurricane and storm shutter protection is a necessary component of Florida living. Whether it’s a hurricane or a tropical storm, the damage can sometimes be devastating-and certainly costly. Roll down shutters, or electric shutters, are the ultimate in protection and ease. In addition to providing shelter from the storm, the shutters can also be lowered at night for home security or when you’re out of town. Although this style has the highest initial cost, it does offer the most practical, effective and convenient protection available. One of the best things about this type of product is that they are built in to the structure – providing a shutter that does not take up any space on the wall. Another plus, you can’t see it unless the shutter is down.

Electric storm shutters have many advantages, but what happens if you leave town and realize you’ve forgotten to put the shutters down? Is your outdoor living space protected? With DryLanai, you don’t have to worry. DryLanai is the ultimate upgrade to electric storm shutters – a wireless system that detects rain and automatically closes electric roll-down storm shutters. So, take that vacation. Go on a road trip. Forget about your storm shutters. DryLanai has you covered.
